My question is one of concern for my elderly mother, who lives alone in her own apartment at a seniors complex. I kind of noticed the other day when I was there, that she had lost some weight, and the meals that she described were not that hefty. My question is this: How or what are the tell tale signs that your elderly parents are not eating the required amount of food, or the right portions? They are alone, and no one is watching them, what do you look for, as signs that malnutrition etc...is taking place?

Hi Rene,
I have a few ideas. Firstly, I would suggest that you alert the primary care physicain of your concern. If your Mom has regular visits then you can compare weight from the last doctor's visit to the weight obtained at an upcoming viist. Or you can ask her to weigh herself regularly (with you being present) more regularly in her home. Just remember that comparative weights will be more accurate using the same scale each time
Your Mom's physican might also order certain blood tests that could show nutritional insufficiencies. A test called a 'Basic Metabolic Profile" is one such test.
Good Luck,
